Sir George Hubert Wilkins becomes the first recipient of the Samuel Finley Breese Morse Medal for using an airplane in “geographical research” – a means of transportation unknown in Morse’s day. The Samuel Finley Breese Morse Medal was established in 1902 with funds bequeathed to the Society by Professor Morse, inventor of the recording telegraph, upon his death in 1872. The medal is for “the encouragement of geographical research.”
