On October 7, 1963 the American Geographical Society awarded the Cullum Geographical medal to Rachel Carson, the author of “The Sea Around Us” and “SilentSpring.” Carson was an American marine biologist and nature writer whose writings arecredited with advancing the global environmental movement.
