Yu Yang: To provide evidence for changing international spatial hierarchy with the integration of East and Southeast Asia in solar energy trade networks.

American Geographical Society: What are the practical, day to day implications of your study?

Yu Yang:The study helps to locate major markets for the solar energy industry.

American Geographical Society: How does your study relate to other work on the subject?

Yu Yang: Most studies of solar energy have focused on national policies and the impact of these policies on energy security. The study supports this work that national policies may have influenced inter-country trade patterns.

American Geographical Society: What are two or three interesting findings that come from your study?

Yu Yang: 1. East and Southeast Asia, particularly China and Singapore, are major cores in world solar energy trade in addition to traditional Western cores

2. Spatial mobility among countries has not led to a decline in network inequality.

American Geographical Society: What might be some of the theoretical implications of this study?

Yu Yang: The paper contributes to the core-periphery debate which is dominated by two schools of thought. The first sees structural constraints as formidable with patterns of trade being spatially fixed. The other sees considerable spatial mobility in the semiperiphery because of their participation in new industries like solar energy. The paper shows that while a few countries in Asia experienced spatial mobility on the core-periphery hierarchy, others also remain un-integrated.
