Meet Our AGS Teacher Fellows

GET TO KNOW OUR TEACHER FELLOWS

The American Geographical Society (AGS) is a 21st-century learning society dedicated to the advancement of geographic thinking, knowledge, and understanding across business, government, academe, social sectors, and most importantly with teachers and students. The Society has been a forerunner in the sponsorship and providing leadership to a number of K-12 oriented efforts including our AGS Geography Teacher Fellows Initiative. This initiative supports AP Human Geography teachers through targeted discussions and projects designed to further geographic and geospatial awareness in the classroom.

Meet our New Fellows

This Fall AGS Geography Teacher Fellows will have a chance to participate in the 2018 AGS-TeachOSM Great County Mapping Contest. AGS has continued to partner with TeachOSM to help teachers construct meaningful open mapping projects for their APHG classes.

2017

Year 2

In addition to attending the Fall Symposium: The Future of Mobility and teachOSM Mapathon sessions, the class of 2017-2018 spent the following day in workshops learning how to utilize resources from the Symposium. During the Mapthon and workshops, teachers learned best practices of mapping while doing exercises. They then learned how to create collaborative OSM projects for their students, such as mapping their own backyards! Teachers also went on historical guided tours of Harlem, led by Dr. Jack Eichenbaum.

Our First Teacher Fellows

In cooperation with the Department of Geography at George Washington University and teachOSM, the American Geographical Society (AGS) and Boundless, hosted the first-ever Mapathon for the 2016 AGS Geography Teacher Fellows. After attending the Fall Symposium, teachers got to put their web mapping skills to the test and discussed ways to implement them in the classroom. Teachers put their web mapping skills to the test, taking part in a meaningful effort to map marginalized and neglected places in the U.S. as part of the Map4America program - a collaboration between the U.S. Census Bureau and teachOSM. Given the 2016 them Envisioning a Sustainable Planet, gateway communities around U.S. National parks were selected as the target areas.
