GET TO KNOW OUR TEACHER FELLOWS
The American Geographical Society (AGS) is committed to providing geographic leadership to a number of K-12 oriented efforts including the AGS Geography Teacher Fellows Initiative. This initiative started in 2016, supports Human Geography teachers through targeted discussions, projects and webinars designed to further geographic and geospatial awareness in the classroom. Every year, selected Fellows to engage in a year-long development program with the American Geographical Society to broaden their geographic and geospatial knowledge.
Please note, each group’s color corresponds with the AGS Fall Symposium’s color theme chosen for that year when they were selected.

Class of 2019-2020
For the fourth consecutive year, AGS Geography Teacher Fellows traveled from all over the United States (and even Brazil!) to attend the Geography 2050: Geography2050: Borders and a Borderless World. Among a number of educational activities, highlights included an instructional tutorial in the basics of OpenStreetMap (OSM), led by Mr. Steven Johnson, Co-Founder of TeachOSM, Mr. Richard Hinton, Spatial Analysis Lab Manager at George Washington University, and Ms. Marcela Zeballos, Managing Director at YouthMappers. Teachers applied newly honed skills to add building data in the border regions of Nogales, Arizona and Cucuta, Colombia.

Class of 2018-2019
The 2018-2019 class had the special opportunity to attend Geography 2050: Powering Our Future Planet on November 15th and 16th. Before the official start of Geography 2050 on November 15th, AGS and Teach OpenStreetMap (TeachOSM) conducted a Mapathon, during which participants worked in OpenStreetMap (OSM) to map unmapped places in the world. Teachers contributed to the open-mapping community and learned how to develop projects for students that relate to their curriculum. AGS Teacher Fellows participated in the Teacher Fellow Workshop, which allowed teachers to recap what they’d learned during the Mapathon and Symposium. The TeachOSM team reviewed how to create compelling mapping projects tailored to the teachers’ curriculum. Teachers enjoyed personalized walking tours of NYC’s Morningside Heights and Central Harlem, led by Dr. Jack Eichenbaum, professor at CUNY Hunter College. Every teacher was gifted a signed copy of “Geography: Why It Matters”, by Dr. Alec Murphy, on behalf of AGS President, Dr. Marie Price.

Class of 2017-2018
In addition to attending the Geography 2050: The Future of Mobility and teachOSM Mapathon sessions, the class of 2017-2018 spent the following day in workshops learning how to utilize resources from the Symposium. During the Mapthon and workshops, teachers learned best practices of mapping while doing exercises. They then learned how to create collaborative OSM projects for their students, such as mapping their own backyards! Teachers also went on historical guided tours of Harlem, led by Dr. Jack Eichenbaum.
