Betsey Smalley

Betsy became a Geography teacher by serendipity. The first half of her career was in information technology, as a Systems Engineer and Project Manager at IBM.

When she began teaching at Cinco Ranch High School in Katy, Texas, she was assigned Geography classes, and quickly fell in love with the discipline. She taught World Geography and AP Human Geography. She was an active member of the World Affairs Council of Houston and her district’s Social Studies Vertical Team, and served as an AP Reader.

In 2013, she was selected for a Transatlantic Outreach Program Fellowship, and participated in a TOP tour in Germany.

She became an American Geographical Society Fellow in 2017, and was selected for the AGS Teacher Fellow Committee in 2019.

Her articles have been published in the Geography Teacher, PM Network, and Cost Engineer.

Currently retired, she enjoys lake life with her husband and Labrador retrievers. Her hobbies include swimming and water sports, reading, and mapping with OpenStreetMap.
